A much needed post!!! Thank you!

Many of us just don’t have the budget for Photoshop and the high ticket Pro tools/plugins. Gimp, which is completly Free, is a great photo editing tool that will satisfy most budding graphic artists.

Putting together this list of tutorials is great!

How is this any better than Photoshop! I am really confused! I have never heard about this program before? though sometimes I do live under a rock!

    What are the advantages, disadvantages?

    • Manny on December 22nd, 2012 at 8:26 pm

What are the advantages? Well, it’s FREE, for one thing. Everything you can do with PS you can do with GIMP.

  20. Jani on October 21st, 2008 at 9:27 am

It’s not that GIMP is better or worse than Photoshop. There are plenty of discussions already about this on the internet, and as some clever guy pointed out, they’re completely unnecessary. GIMP is another program, not a Photoshop copy. It follows its own path and own goals, features, …

However, you can do anything with GIMP that you can with Photoshop. If not, you just don’t know how to use it. And it doesn’t cost you 999$ either.
The only differences between Photoshop and GIMP are some functions you may never use in your whole life.
If you need to use those, you’ll already be a professional and know whether to use GIMP or Photoshop for the current task…

    • Carolyn on September 26th, 2010 at 4:43 pm

I have GIMP, but cannot figure out how to get an image into a rectangle to start my ebook cover. I click on the rectangle, open the image and nothing happens. The only way the figure will appear on my GIMP workspace is if I put the image there first, but then I can’t put in any background color or test. Can any one help this newbie?

      Thanks so much.

  21. Rick on October 21st, 2008 at 2:35 pm

Yeah, if you can unearth some more GIMP tutorials, that’d be great! I keep a collection on my del.icio.us bookmarks. I’m adding this blog post as one right now.

As for GIMP vs. Photoshop, what I’m hearing/reading is that if you need to use CMYK features, use Photoshop….but if you’re in a situation where you need that, you’re probably already using it anyway. GIMP is pretty powerful, and I’m finding a lot of good uses for it.

  22. Dainis Graveris on October 25th, 2008 at 3:32 am

Great tutorial roundup, maybe it’s time for me too to learn and polish my Gimp skills..:)

  23. stephentrepreneur on October 26th, 2008 at 6:40 am

I’ve used GIMP religiously for about 12 months, and thought I had taught myself a lot of great stuff … but this list gives me a lot of extra stuff to apply.
Thanks, I’m adding a lot of these to my delicious.com for future reading.

  24. highblood on October 28th, 2008 at 2:25 pm

thanks for sharing. This is a good source for those starting to learn GIMP (like me)and for those who want to develop their skills on GIMP.

  25. Ajit on October 28th, 2008 at 8:00 pm

hello, I just wanted to stop by and say thanks for including several of my tutorials on that list :) means a lot. I hope to see additional Gimp content as well.

As far as the PS vs Gimp conversation goes, I’d say if you are new to graphics and would like to pursue it, try Gimp first to see if you really are into it and you are decent at it. You won’t magically improve using Photoshop, it is all about the knowledge of the programs, I use both all the time.

  26. Bored on November 6th, 2008 at 3:36 pm

the problem with gimp is backwards compatibility with photoshop if even one line is messed up i would never use it.
