September 2013 Edition: 18 Just Released, Fresh and Free WordPress Themes

Congratulation selfies. It’s a full year now that we showcase the freshest WordPress themes on a monthly basis. If you follow Noupe closely, hardly any new, free WordPress theme should slip your radar. This makes it easy not only to keep track of the latest and greatest, it also helps you decide for contemporary themes from a smaller, well curated number of designs, where the official repository is dominated by thousands of outdated templates. IcoMoon, Fontello and Fontastic.me: Best of Icon Fonts

Mobile devices with their comparably small screens boost the use of icons as natural choices for navigation menus in modern web design. New icon sets get created by the hour. Especially mobile design is the trigger for a new breed of icons. These are no longer implemented in the form of individual PNGs or so-called sprites. Icon’s successor is the icon font. Iconfonts have many advantages with the biggest being their free scalability to any size, while at the same time reducing server requests to an absolute minimum. The downside of icon fonts is, that in most cases you will not need the whole font set or – even worse – need icons from different font sets. Font generators have come to deal with both of these problems. Today we’ll take a look at three of the best generators the web has to offer…

HTML5 Gaming: Benchmarking Sprites to Target All Browsers

When I meet with game studios, I often have the same question put to me over and over: if I’m writing/porting my game in HTML5, will it run well on the various targeted devices? For instance, we all know that mobile devices can’t animate as many sprites as a desktop PC and preserve 60 FPS (frames per second).

Street Creativity: The Art of Japanese Manhole Covers

Of all the complaints you’ll hear from creatives about disrespectful clients, on all of the websites dedicated to crazy, and rude clients, you’ll never see the name of a Japanese creative, complaining about a client. Why is that? Perhaps because in a country that values creativity, that entitles creatives as “living treasures,” clients don’t try to talk jobs worth thousands, down to $50, or come up with excuses to not pay for work done. Before you pack up and move to Japan, enjoy this collection of street art, an outdoor gallery of manhole cover art, and dream of a place where you are worshipped for your creative abilities.
